Instrumentation engineering is the engineering specialization focused on the principle and operation of measuring and control instruments which are used in design and configuration of automated processes. A highly interdisciplinary branch- Instrumentation engineering covers major aspects of chemical, mechanical and electrical and electronics fundamentals. Instrumentation Engineering provides students with sound theoretical and practical knowledge and training in the operation and maintenance of automated process control and measurement instruments used in the production of various commodities. & Control engineers are responsible for the research, design, development and control devices/systems, typically in manufacturing facilities and plants. The practice uses sensors to measure the output performance of the device being controlled and those measurements can be used to give feedback to the input actuators that can make corrections toward desired performance. When a device is designed to perform without the need of human inputs for correction it is called automatic control (such as cruise control for regulating a car's speed). Multi-disciplinary in nature, control systems engineering activities focus on implementation of control systems mainly derived by mathematical modeling of systems of a diverse range.
Almost all process and manufacturing industry such as steel, oil, petrochemical, power and defiance production will have a separate instrumentation and control department, which is manned and managed by instrumentation and control engineers. “Automation is the buzz word in process industry, and automation is the core job of instrumentation and control engineers. Hence, the demand for instrumentation will always be there."
The Instrumentation and Control Diploma Engineers get employment opportunities in both hardware & software industries. The options being Engineering design, Simulation, Development, Fabrication, Testing, Quality Control, & Marketing In Industries like Industrial Automation, Home Automation, Nuclear Power Stations, Aircraft Instrumentation & Controls, Refineries, Petrochemical, Chemical & Food Industries, Cement, Textile, Paper industries, Pharmaceutical, Engineering , Electrical & electronic, Biomedical , Thermal power station, & Automobile Industries, Fertilizer industries, Wood processing, Mining, etc. with the goal of improving system productivity, reliability, safety, optimization and stability.
Tools required for the automation e.g. DCS, PLC, SCADA, are covered under the curriculum of Instrumentation Engineering. This stream of engg.includes the detail study of electronic, pneumatic, and hydraulic instrumentation systems as well. Computerized controls are used at a very large scale in process industries, refineries, petrochemical industries and many more. Control and computing are essential features of any modern instrumentation and control system. Therefore Digital Signal Processing, embedded systems and Application Software Practices- MATLAB, Lab View are important areas for design and manufacturing of modern instruments and control systems. Biomedical Instrumentation is also an important subject in instrumentation. Growing requirement of control and computing has created a large space for "Research in Instrumentation"
